Former Chelsea assistant coach of Nigerian lineage, Coach Eddie Newton has been officially appointed permanent coach of Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor.
Eddie Newton has handed the deal on permanent terms. He finished successfully guiding Trabzonspor to win the Turkish Cup.
The victorious match was only his second game as caretaker boss after the club mutually agreed to part agreements with Huseyin Cimsir.
Eddie Newton was appointed assistant coach of Trabzonspor in February 2020 after spending eight years as a Chelsea assistant coach.
He was assistant head coach at Premier League side Chelsea to manager Roberto Di Matteo before the latter was replaced by Rafael Benítez.
According to Trabzonspor in a press release posted on their official website “Our Board of Directors has taken the decision to continue as the Coach in the new season with Eddie Newton, who is a coach in our A team.
“We wish Newton success in his post.”
Since 2003, Newton has been married to Zeliha Kılıc Newton, who is of Turkish origin and has a Swedish passport.
The 48-year-old represented Chelsea teams for 14 years and is celebrated for scoring in the 1997 FA Cup final vs Middlesbrough.
Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has taken to social media to congratulate Trabzonspor on winning the 2020 Ziraat Turkish Cup after beating Aytemiz Alanyaspor 2-0 in the showpiece on Wednesday.
It was the first trophy won by the Black Sea Storm in ten years since winning the 2010 Turkish Super Cup and a coach of Nigerian descent in Eddie Newton made it possible.
Mikel has a past with Trabzonspor as he was their signing last summer but had to end his association with the club in March 2020 over coronavirus fears.
The Super Eagles legend featured in three Turkish Cup games before bidding his farewell to Trabzonspor, against Altay SK and Denizlispor (2), played for 187 minutes.
Mikel stated via his Instagram page: ” Congratulations Trabzonspor on winning the cup final. Well done boys and the city deserve it”.
During his time at Stamford Bridge, Mikel was part of the Chelsea teams alongside legend Drogba that won the FA Cup in 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012.
