The Football Association Challenge Cup, which is widely refers to as the FA Cup is the oldest national football competition in the world, founded on November, 1871 (150 years ago).
The FA Cup is a yearly knockout football competition in local English men’s football organised and named after The Football Association (The FA).
In 2015, after the sponsorship by Emirates Airlines, it has been rename to be known as The Emirates FA Cup with concurrent women’s tournament is also held, The Women’s FA Cup.
Current Holder: Leicester City (1-0 win over Chelsea) with the help of Youri Tielesman’s controversial winning goal which saw the difference of the game.
History of The FA Cup
In 1863, the Football Association published a new Laws of the Game of Association Football, merging the different rules of the game that has been in use before then.
The then FA Secretary, C. W. Alcock on July 20 1871, proposed to the FA committee that “it is desirable that a Challenge Cup should be established in the name of the Association for which all clubs belonging to the Association should be invited to participate”.
The first FA Cup tournament was commenced in November 1871 with Wanderers crowned the winners in the final, on 16 March 1872. They also defend the trophy the following year.
After the 1914/15 season, the competition was suspended due to First World War until 1919/20.
The 1923 FA Cup Final, known as the “White Horse Final”, was the first final to be played at the Empire Stadium (now Wembley Stadium).
Hence, in 1927 final, the now pre-match tradition song of the FA Cup “Abide with Me” is first being sung for the first time at the Cup final.
However, in 1938/39 and 1945/46, the competition was not organised due to the World War II.
In year 2000, the modern practice of finishing the semi-final and final matches on the day was introduced instead of the previous culture of replays after a draw.
Also, the 2001 – 2006 finals saw the finals of the FA Cup being played at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, being the first time the cup finals will be played outside England die to the redevelopment of the Wembley Stadium.

The final returned to Wembley in 2007, followed by the semi-finals from 2008.

“Abide With Me” Lyrics
Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide. When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, O abide with me. Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day; Earth's joys grow dim; its glories pass away; Change and decay in all around I see; O Thou who changest not, abide with me. Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word, But as Thou dwell'st with Thy disciples, Lord, Familiar, condescending, patient, free. Come not to sojourn, but abide with me. Come not in terror, as the King of kings, But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings; Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea. Come, Friend of sinners, thus abide with me. Thou on my head in early youth didst smile, And though rebellious and perverse meanwhile, Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee. On to the close, O Lord, abide with me. I need Thy presence every passing hour. What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power? Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me. I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless; Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness. Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if Thou abide with me. Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes; Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies. Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee; In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me
