It seems like the greatest of all time summer has come to arrive as we saw the unimaginable transfer happening and keep coming towards the deadline day.
Given the numerous of international competitions like the European Championship, Copa América, CONCACAF Nations Cup, the Gold Cup and the Olympics, not many would have envisioned the transfer window claiming the headlines as the new season gets underway proper.
The financial situation of most top European clubs, who are known as the big spenders is also another frailty that was foreseen as one of the many reasons there won’t be much uproar in the transfer market.
However, reverse has been the case in the transfer market so far with players and clubs doing unimaginable deals, and players whom you would never had thought would put on a different shirt will now represent and fight for it.
For series and movies lovers, trust you’ve never watched a movie as interesting as this summer transfer proceedings.
Starting with the unimaginable, Lionel Messi left Barcelona!. He will be lining up for PSG in the next two years or more. The Argentine moved to the French capital due to awkward reasons, he could not continue with a side he had been with since 2003.
That was after the same club, Paris-Saint Germain secured the services of the captain of Barcelona’s Clasico rivals, Sergio Ramos, who left Real Madrid after failing to accept new contract terms in time before it was eventually withdraw.
Real Madrid of course did not only lose Sergio Ramos who had been with them for 15 seasons, they also sanctioned the sale of his partner at the heart of their defence, as Raphael Varane moved to Manchester United in a deal around £34m.
Unfortunately for both Real Madrid and Barcelona, defending LaLiga champions, Atletico Madrid have the cash to splash and have added quality players so far this summer.
Rodrigo de Paul, Matheus Cunha, Marcos Paolo and Monaco Goalkeeper, Benjamin Lecomte All joining Diego Simeone’s army as they look to retain the league title and do better in the Champions league.
Manchester United were interested in Varane before he joined Real Madrid from Lens back in 2011 under Sir Alex Ferguson. Ten years later, he is a United player awaiting his debut.
Jadon Sancho was linked with Manchester United before joining Borussia Dortmund in 2017, and was closer to joining the club last summer.
But the deal could not happen and this summer it did, and Sancho is now a United player on a five year contract, after the asking price £72.5m was paid.
Manchester United also brought back Tom Heaton to the club, over 11 years after the English Goalkeeper left the club.
In the other side of Manchester, Sergio Agüero left City for Barcelona to team up with his Argentina teammate, Lionel Messi. However, he could not even get to train with the player, who is now on the books at PSG.
Harry Kane was the player tout to replace Sergio Agüero at Manchester City but after the Citizens agreed personal terms with the England striker during the Euros, Tottenham were reluctant to sell and City instead went for a totally different option in Jack Grealish, and made the ex-Villa captain the most expensive English player in history.
Romelu Lukaku spent three years on the books at Chelsea after leaving his boyhood club, Anderlecht, but things did not go his way. Seven years on, Chelsea made him the most expensive player in the club’s history, paying £98.7 to Inter Milan to return the player to the Stamford Bridge.
Fortunately, the signs look promising as he has already hit the ground running on his debut, playing a vital role in Chelsea 2-0 win over Arsenal in the Premier League matchday Two. He scored a goal and was very handful in the second.
And Arsenal never ceases to amaze in transfer windows. This time, they were linked with Yves Bissouma, Manuel Locatelli, Ruben Neves and Bruno Guimares but end up signing Albert Sambi Lokonga.
The Gunners are currently the highest spenders in Europe and after almost £140m spent on transfer, Mikel Arteta will have arguably the same starting XI as of last season. Incredulous, isn’t it ?
PSG Paris-Saint Germain in this window have bought Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, Georginio Wijnaldum and Gianluigi Donnarouma all for free. And have also added Achraf Hakimi from Inter Milan in a €60m deal.
The only blemish on what would have been a perfect summer for Les Parisens is Kylian Mbappé’s refusal to stay at the club beyond this summer. The player is now close to a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid in a €170m plus add ons deal.
Imagine turning down the chance to play with the best XI in the world ? Kylian Mbappé must have held fulfilling his childhood dreams highest.
It was also a crazy move by PSG, turning down a €160m offer by Real Madrid, for a player with just a year left on his contract. But who is the crazier, as Madrid dare offering that huge amount for a player they can get for free next summer ?
And when you thought it can’t get any interesting than it was, Cristiano Ronaldo out of the blue decided he is no more playing for Juventus and appeared to be heading for Manchester City, only to change his mind in the last minute when he heard of United’s interest.
Ronaldo will now be returning to Manchester United, 12 years after leaving the club as personal terms has been agreed, and both clubs involved have reached neutral ground also.
What a crazy and which will be like the greatest summer of all time. And it can even get crazier!
