Who owns Newcastle United
Initially, Newcastle United was set up to be a private company limited by shares until 1997, when John Hall bought 72.9% of the club and put the club on stock exchange as a public limited company.
December 1993, a media group NLT bought a 6.3% share of the club and had considered the full takeover but was later dropped after concern about football clubs being owned by a media.
These led to the takeover of Newcastle United in 2007 by a businessman Mike Ashley who bought a combined 41% shares of the club and later amount to 95% in July 2007 forcing other shareholders to sell off.
Since the full takeover, Ashley has reportedly put the club up for sale in three different occasions which was in 2008, 2009 and 2017 respectively but a deal could not be completed.
